Thyroid

The thyroid gland is a small gland located in the front of the neck below the larynx (Adam's apple). The thyroid produces hormones which regulate metabolism.

Below are diseases & conditions associated with the thyroid. 

Hyperthyroidism  Condition in which the thyroid produces too much thyroid hormone.
  • Graves’ Disease Autoimmune disease caused by an overactive thyroid gland.
  • Subacute Thyroiditis Inflammation of the thyroid gland which usually occurs after an upper respiratory.
  • Toxic Adenoma Benign tumor of the thyroid gland.
  • Postpartum Thyroiditis  A painless inflammation of the thyroid gland that can occur in the mother after delivery.
Hypothyroidism  Condition in which the thyroid produces low levels of thyroid hormone.
  • Hashimotos Thyroiditis Disease that develops when the immune system makes antibodies that attack and eventually destroy the thyroid gland.
  • Thyroid and Pregnancy Thyroid disorder occurring around or during pregnancy. Most common is hypothyroidism.
Goiter Enlargement of the thyroid gland.
Thyroid Nodules Abnormal benign growths which form a lump in the thyroid gland.
Thyroid Cancer Cancer in the thyroid gland.
  • Papillary Thyroid Cancer Cancer of the follicular cells in thyroid tissue.
  • Follicular Thyroid Cancer Cancer of the follicular cells in the thyroid.
  • Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer Cancer in which the malignant nodules compress the surrounding neck tissues.
  • Medullary Thyroid Cancer Cancer of the parafollicular cells (C cells) of the thyroid.
