Neonatology
Our level III neonatal intensive care unit was founded in 1972 as one of the first facilities of its kind in the Chicagoland area. With 44 beds, we admit over 500 infants every year, and thanks to our eleven board-certified neonatologists with an average of 20 years experience, we are able to provide comprehensive care for a full range of neonatal problems. These include extreme prematurity, multiples, and congenital problems -. We provide a full range of neonatal surgical services onsite, with the exception of cardiac surgery. Infants requiring cardiac surgery are transferred to Children’s Memorial Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, or University of Chicago, depending on parental preference.
We have a philosophy of family-centered care with a “team approach” that has proved very successful, characterized by close collaboration with nursing, Perinatal Family Support and MFM. Our close academic partnership with the University of Chicago has fostered an academic environment that encourages the exchange of ideas and the promotion of cutting-edge approaches to clinical problems.
Having a baby in the Infant Special Care Unit can be a very stressful experience. We feel that the best way to help parents through this difficult time is to keep them well informed and to maintain good lines of communication. Please see the links on the left-hand side of this page for more information about communicating with your baby’s doctor. There are also links to pages that discuss some of the more common problems that babies encounter in the ISCU, along with links to other topics such as discharge criteria.
